Where has passion gone to? How did we let it disappear? Passion is the fire that used to burn in the bones of the saints. Pentecost marked the primitive church with raw passion. Those disciples followed the fiery steps of Abraham, Moses, Deborah, Elijah and a host of other living flames of the Lord. The Lord of the prophets burned with wrath. Jesus Himself was consumed with zeal for the glory of His Father. His Spirit desires us zealously. Our Triune God is altogether passionate; He is a, “consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29).
Christendom lost its fire when it became a socio-political movement. Stoicism told us that reason had to rule in matters of faith and philosophy; and that the passions were signs of immaturity. Many believers were afraid of being called extremists and fanatics; so they expelled the word ‘passion’ from their theological vocabulary. Who ever gave us the right to take the fire out of the Gospel? Does anyone know whatever happened to men who used to burn in the pulpit? Leonard Ravenhill pointed out, “We have a cold church in a cold world because the preachers are cold.” Reason may instruct us; but passion is what inspires us!
Jesus, the stone rejected by men, provoked hatred and anger wherever He went. He called the religious, ‘children of the devil’ and told them that they would die in their sins if they didn’t repent. He was no campaigner for man’s self-esteem and psychology. When Paul the apostle came to a town, they wanted to cut that man of God in pieces and feed him to the dogs. Do you honestly think that Jesus and Paul were indifferent in spiritual affairs? A million times, no! They burned for the Gospel of the kingdom of God. They were the personification of passion! If Jesus and Paul returned to the vast majority of professing churches nowadays, they would be stoned to death within a quarter of an hour. How can a saint survive in the midst of such persecution and torment? By the power of the Holy Ghost fire that blazes within him or her!
We have become used to smooth, sweet, weak, butter-like Christian living that melts at the first sign of trouble. Real Christianity is for soldiers and warriors that will obtain the victory or else they will die fighting! True biblical faith does not know what it is to surrender to the enemy! It never gives up!
Passion is what puts fight in a saint. Passion is what makes us brave in the battle. If the dog of hell bites you, then bite the damned dog back! Pluralism and relativism, both offspring of postmodernism, have led our contemporary generation to indifference towards all spheres of life, including the religious. Our age needs fire like never before. But who is going to burn for the glory of the Gospel? Who will be passionate? Who will not be ashamed to stand with their mouth wide open and their heart ablaze declaring, “thus saith the Lord” to all of the perversity and depravity surrounds them?
If God is fire; then His servants are to be as a fire. God calls you to burn, to ignite, to provoke, to be passionate once again for the glory of the living God. Burn, soldier of the Most High; and many will draw near to feel the heat of your fire! Stir up that passion that lies dormant within!

FEBRERO 2010: PASIÓN
¿Adónde se ha ido la pasión? ¿Cómo pudimos dejarla desaparecer? La pasión es aquel fuego que antes ardía en los huesos de los santos. El día de Pentecostés marcó la iglesia primitiva con una pasión cruda. Aquellos discípulos siguieron los pasos encendidos de Abraham, Moisés, Deborah, Elías y una multitud de otras llamas vivas del Señor. El Señor de los profetas ardía en Su ira. Cristo mismo fue consumido con celo por la gloria de Su Padre. Su Espíritu nos anhela celosamente. Nuestro Dios trino es completamente apasionado; Él es, “fuego consumidor” (Hebreos 12:29).
La Cristiandad perdió su fuego cuando se convirtió en un movimiento socio-político. El estoicismo nos dijo que la razón había de gobernar en los asuntos de fe y filosofía; las pasiones eran una señal de inmadurez. Muchos creyentes tenían miedo a ser llamados ‘extremistas’ y ‘fanáticos’; y por eso expulsaron la palabra ‘pasión’ de su vocabulario teológico. ¿Quién nos dio el derecho de quitar el fuego del Evangelio? ¿Alguien sabrá qué ha pasado con los hombres que ardían en el púlpito? ¿Dónde están? Destacó Leonard Ravenhill, “Tenemos una iglesia fría en un mundo frío porque los predicadores son fríos”. ¡La razón nos puede instruir; pero la pasión nos inspira!
Jesús, la piedra rechazada por los hombres, provocó odio e ira dondequiera que iba. Éste llamó a los religiosos ‘hijos del diablo’ y les dijo que morirían en sus pecados si no se arrepintiesen. Cristo nunca organizó campañas a favor del auto-estima y auto-superación del hombre. Cuando el apóstol Pablo llegó a una ciudad, querían cortar a aquel hombre de Dios en pedazos y tirarle a los perros. ¿Acaso piensas que Jesús y Pablo eran indiferentes tocante a los asuntos espirituales? ¡Mil veces, no! Ardían por el Evangelio del reino de Dios. ¡Eran la personificación de la pasión! Si Cristo y Pablo volviesen a la mayoría de las iglesias profesantes de nuestros días, serían apedreados hasta la muerte dentro de un cuarto de hora. ¿Cómo puede un santo sobrevivir en medio de tanta persecución y tormenta? ¡Por medio del poder del fuego del Espíritu Santo que arde dentro de él o ella!
Nos hemos acostumbrado a una vida cristiana tan suave, dulce, floja, que se parece a un bloque de mantequilla que se derrita ante la primera aparición de un problema. ¡El verdadero cristianismo es para soldados y guerreros que obtendrán la victoria o darán su vida en el combate! ¡La fe verdaderamente bíblica no sabe lo que es rendirse al enemigo! ¡Nunca se tira la toalla!
La pasión es lo que pone agresión en un santo. La pasión es lo que nos hace valientes en la batalla. ¡Si el perro del infierno te muerde, entonces muérdele tú a aquel maldito perro! El pluralismo y relativismo, ambos hijos del posmodernismo, han llevado a nuestra generación contemporánea hacia una indiferencia total en cuanto a todas las esferas de la vida, incluyendo la religiosa. ¡Nuestra época necesita fuego más que nunca antes! Pero, ¿quién va a arder por la gloria del Evangelio? ¿Quién será apasionado? ¿Quién no se avergonzará de ponerse de pie con la boca abierta y el corazón encendido proclamando, “así ha dicho el Señor” a toda la perversidad y depravación que le rodea?
Si Dios es fuego; entonces Sus siervos han de ser como fuego. Dios te llama a arder, a encender, a provocar, a ser apasionado una vez más por la gloria del Dios viviente. ¡Arde, soldado del Altísimo; y muchas se acercarán para sentir el calor de tu fuego! ¡Enciende aquella pasión que está dormida en ti!

¡NO HAY TAL COSA como una buena persona! (Español)
Quizá este mensaje no sea una lectura agradable; pero he decidido escribir este breve artículo urgentemente titulado, ‘No hay tal cosa como una buena persona’ porque es algo que nosotros, como creyentes, tenemos que confrontar constantemente en el evangelismo y a la hora de compartir el evangelio. Tristemente, he notado que muchos santos no se enteran de la importancia ni de la claridad de esta doctrina bíblica tan fundamental. Además, veo a muy poco ministerios en Internet que estén ofreciendo ayuda a los creyentes en esta área porque no es un tema popular en nuestra sociedad humanística y hombre-céntrica. ¡Muchos están más preocupados por perder algunos miembros de su grupo que por predicar la verdad! Una de las necesidades más apremiantes de la iglesia del siglo XXI es entender lo que la Biblia REALMENTE dice acerca de los hombres y mujeres no salvos.
Si preguntas a la gente, “¿A dónde irás después de la muerte?” un 95% te contestará, “Voy al cielo”. Y luego si preguntas a aquellas personas, “¿Por qué?” Casi un 100% te dirá, “Porque soy una buena persona”. Los principios que voy a presentar aquí son bíblicos, así que apunta los versículos con libertad e intenta aprender algunos de ellos de memoria; y no tengas miedo de usarlos en tus diálogos con los incrédulos. Es el poder del Espíritu Santo que trae convicción de pecado, y sabemos que el Espíritu siempre obra en armonía con la Palabra de Dios: “y ellos, llenos del Espíritu, hablaron con denuedo la palabra de Dios” (Hechos 4:31).
‘Yo soy una buena persona’ es la mentira más feroz que Satanás jamás ha vendido a la humanidad. Esta perversión de la verdad ha enviado a más personas al infierno que cualquier otra a lo largo de la historia del mundo. ¿Cuántas veces has oído estas frases: ‘Voy al cielo porque soy una buena persona!’ o ‘No necesito arrepentirme porque soy una buena persona’ o ‘Dios me ama porque soy una buena persona’? ¡Mal, mal, mal!
Los incrédulos pueden tener unas ideas religiosas maravillosas y quizá te impresionen con su conocimiento; pero la única cosa que necesitan saber es que son PECADORES. Esto siempre ha sido la manera bíblica de predicar; y si tú compartes el evangelio de otra forma, tu evangelio (lamento decírtelo) no es escritural.
Si nos gusta o no, cada individuo nace en iniquidad (Salmo 51:5; 58:3); la caída de Adán en el Edén ha afectado a toda su posteridad (Romanos 5:18-19). Pero hoy día este tipo de lenguaje bíblico no es popular porque queremos tener a entrenadores de baloncesto en nuestros púlpitos para decirnos lo bueno que somos y para reconfortar nuestro ego.
Debido a nuestro estado pecaminoso y depravado, estamos completamente pervertidos ante los ojos de Dios, malos en todos nuestros pensamientos e imaginaciones (Génesis 6:5; Job 15:14-16; Salmo 130:3; 143:2; Eclesiastés 7:20; Jeremías 13:23; 1 Juan 1:8). No hay nadie que pueda decir, ‘Me he mantenido limpio; y nunca he pecado’ (Proverbios 20:9); incluso nuestras buenas obras- religiosas, morales- son una abominación para Dios (Isaías 64:6). La luz vino a este mundo y la odiamos porque amamos las tinieblas (Juan 3:19). Y CADA UNO, CADA INDIVIDUO que hay entre nosotros está en pecado, ¡sin excepción! (Sea el pastor o el anciano más piadoso de tu iglesia; sea un violador serial que está a punto de morir mediante la inyección letal). No hay ninguno bueno, NO NI UNO (Romanos 3:9-12). Y si decimos que no hemos pecado, ¡somos unos mentirosos! No lo he dicho yo, sino el Espíritu Santo (1 Juan 1:8).
Y este carácter pecaminoso significa que, por naturaleza, odiamos a Dios. Nunca nos acercaríamos a Él porque nuestra mente carnal es enemistad contra Él. Romano 8:7 no solamente nos dice que somos enemigos de Dios; sino que nuestra mente es ENEMISTAD contra Él. Yo puedo reconciliarme con mi enemigo; pero jamás con la enemistad misma. Somos tan depravados que Cristo dijo, “Ninguno PUEDE acercarse a Mí” (Juan 6:44; 6:65; 8:43-45; 10:26; 12:37-41). El espíritu de este mundo no puede recibir la verdad de Cristo (Juan 14:17; 1 Corintios 2:14).
Así que, el hombre natural está muerto en pecado ante Dios. Él no está ‘enfermo’ en pecados ni ‘medio-muerto’ en transgresiones. No hay grados de muerte. O estás muerto o estás vivo; o uno o el otro. Y el hombre pecador está muerto (Génesis 2:16-17; Colosenses 2:13). De allí la necesidad del NUEVO NACIMIENTO porque estamos muertos en delitos y pecados (Juan 3:5-7; Efesios 2:1-3).
Nuestra vida, sin Cristo, es una de mal continúo y ceguera espiritual; y el corazón carnal es completamente engañoso (Génesis 8:21; Eclesiastés 9:3; Jeremías 17:9; Marcos 7:21-23; Juan 3:19-21; Efesios 4:17-19; 5:8) porque en un estado sin Cristo, somos siervos de Satanás (Juan 8:34; 8:44; Romanos 6:20; 2 Timoteo 2:25-26; Tito 3:3; 1 Juan 5:19). Esto quiere decir que todo el ser del hombre o de la mujer no regenerado está mal y maligno 100% a la vista de Dios (Job 14:4; Mateo 7:16-18; Santiago 1:13-14).
No hay tal cosa como una buena persona. A la luz de tantos versículos bíblicos, casi no necesito afirmar la importancia de esta doctrina. ¿Por qué es esta verdad tan importante? ¡Porque sin esta enseñanza jamás vamos a evangelizar a los perdidos! ¿Por qué preocuparnos por predicar el evangelio si no hay tal cosa como un pecador?
Si pensamos de verdad que los esquimales en el Polo Norte o las tribus remotas y escondidas en la selva amazónica son buenas personas en lo más fondo de su corazón; y como no han oído el evangelio, van a ir al cielo cuando se mueran; entonces pregunto, ¿por qué malgastar nuestro tiempo evangelizando? La abuelita más amable y dulce que hay, y que no conoce a Cristo, es una pecadora, así es, ¡si nos gusta o no! Los apóstoles sabían que cada persona sobre la faz de la tierra está completamente perdida y se está yendo hacia el infierno; y el único remedio para aquel estado maldito es las BUENAS NUEVAS del EVANGELIO de Jesucristo. Él vino para “salvar a Su pueblo de sus pecados” (Mateo 1:21).
¡Predica a Cristo, y a éste crucificado; predica el poder de Su preciosa sangre! Predica: ‘¡Arrepiéntete porque el reino de los cielos se ha acercado!’ como todos los profetas de antaño. Predica el evangelio, a tiempo y fuera de tiempo; y no permitas que nadie más te engañe con esta mentira réproba del infiero, ‘Soy una buena persona’.
La próxima vez que alguien te dice que es una buena persona; contéstale bíblicamente, ‘No hay tal cosa como una buena persona’.

There is NO SUCH THING as a good person!

This may not be pleasant reading; but I have decided to write this brief article rather urgently entitled, ‘There is no such thing as a good person’ because it is something that we, as believers, constantly face in evangelism and sharing the Gospel. I have sadly noticed that many saints do not realize the importance and clarity of this fundamental biblical doctrine. Futhermore, I don’t see many online ministries offering any type of material to help believers in this area as it is not too popular a topic in a humanistic and man-centred society. God forbid these online ministries might lose some fans for telling the truth for once! One of the greatest needs of the 21st century church is to understand what the Bible REALLY has to say about unsaved men and women.
Ask 95% of ungodly people where they think they’re going when they die; and they will say “heaven”; ask them “why”, and almost 100% will reply, “Because I’m a good person!” The principles I outline here are biblical, so feel free to take note of the Scriptures and try to learn some of them off by heart, and don’t be afraid to use them when talking to the unsaved. It is the power of the Spirit of God who brings conviction of sin, and we know that the Spirit of God always works in harmony with the Word: “and they being filled with the Spirit spoke the Word of the Lord with boldness” (Acts 4:31).
‘I am a good person’ is the biggest lie that Satan has ever sold mankind. This perversion of the truth has sent more people to hell than any other affirmation in world history. How often have you heard statements like these, ‘I’m going to heaven because I’m a good person’; or, ‘I don’t need to repent and put faith in Christ because I’m a good person’; or ‘God loves me because I’m a good person’. Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!
Unbelievers may have wonderful religious views and they may try to impress you with their learning; but the one thing they must know is that they are SINNERS! That was always the Biblical way of preaching; and if you share the Gospel in any other way, your Gospel (I’m afraid to say) is not Scriptural.
Whether we like it or not, every single person is born in iniquity (Psalm 51:5; 58:3); Adam’s sin in Eden has come upon all of his posterity, including us (Romans 5:18-19). But this type of biblical language is not popular nowadays because we want basketball coaches in our pulpits to tell us how good we are and to soothe our egos.
Due to our sinful and depraved state, we are completely perverted in the eyes of God, wicked in every thought and imagination (Genesis 6:5; Job 15:14-16; Psalm 130:3; 143:2; Ecclesiastes 7:20; Jeremiah 13:23; 1 John 1:8). There is absolutely no-one who can say that they have kept themselves clean and never sinned (Proverbs 20:9); and even our good, moral and religious works are an abomination to the Lord (Isaiah 64:6). Light came into this world and we hated it because we loved darkness (John 3:19). And EVERY SINGLE ONE of us is in sin, without exception! Whether it be the holiest pastor or elder in your local church to the serial rapist that faces the lethal injection (Romans 3:9-12). There is none good, NO NOT ONE! And if we say that we haven’t sinned, we are liars! I didn’t say that; the Holy Spirit did (1 John 1:8).
This sinful character means that we hate God by nature; and we would never draw near to Him because our carnal mind is enmity against Him. Romans 8:7 doesn’t just tell us that we are enemies of God; but that our very mind is ENMITY against God. I can reconcile my enemy; but I can never reconcile enmity itself. We are so depraved that Jesus said, “No man CAN come to me!” We cannot understand His Truth because we are, by nature, children of wrath (John 6:44; 6:65; 8:43-45; 10:26; 12:37-41). The spirit of this world cannot receive the truth of Christ (John 14:17; 1 Corinthians 2:14).
So then, natural man is dead in sins towards God. He is not ‘sick’ in sin or ‘half-dead’ in sin. There are no grades of death. You’re either dead or alive; one or the other. And sinful man is dead (Genesis 2:16-17; Colossians 2:13). That’s why we need to be BORN AGAIN because we are dead in trespasses and iniquities (John 3:5-7; Ephesians 2:1-3).
Our life, without Christ, is one of continual evil and spiritual blindness and the carnal heart is completely deceptive (Genesis 8:21; Ecclesiastes 9:3; Jeremiah 17:9; Mark 7:21-23; John 3:19-21; Ephesians 4:17-19; Ephesians 5:8) because in that Christ-less state we are captive to the devil (John 8:34; 8:44; Romans 6:20; 2 Timothy 2:25-26; Titus 3:3; 1 John 5:19). That means then that the whole nature of the unsaved man or woman is wholly evil in the sight of God (Job 14:4; Matthew 7:16-18; 12:33; Mark 7:21-23; James 1:13-14).
There is no such thing as a good person. In the light of so many biblical verses, it hardly remains to be stated how important this teaching is. Why is it so important to understand this truth? Because without it we will never evangelize the lost! Why bother preaching the Gospel if there’s no such thing as a sinner?
If we think that Eskimos in the North Pole or tribes hidden in the Amazon Jungle are good people at heart; and because they’ve never heard the Gospel that they will somehow get to heaven; then why would we waste our time evangelizing? The sweetest old grandmother who ever lived that doesn't know Christ is a sinner, plain and simple, whether we like it or not! The apostles knew that every single man and woman on the face of the earth is completely lost in sin and hell-bound; and the only remedy for that cursed estate is the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! He came to “save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).
Preach Christ and Him crucified; preach the power of His precious blood! Preach 'Repent! for the kingdom of God is at hand!' like all the prophets of old! Preach the Gospel in season and out; and don’t let anyone deceive you anymore with this damned lie from hell, ‘I’m a good person’.
The next time someone tells you that they’re a good person; reply biblically, ‘There is no such thing as a good person.’
This may not be pleasant reading; but I have decided to write this brief article rather urgently entitled, ‘There is no such thing as a good person’ because it is something that we, as believers, constantly face in evangelism and sharing the Gospel. I have sadly noticed that many saints do not realize the importance and clarity of this fundamental biblical doctrine. Futhermore, I don’t see many online ministries offering any type of material to help believers in this area as it is not too popular a topic in a humanistic and man-centred society. God forbid these online ministries might lose some fans for telling the truth for once! One of the greatest needs of the 21st century church is to understand what the Bible REALLY has to say about unsaved men and women.
Ask 95% of ungodly people where they think they’re going when they die; and they will say “heaven”; ask them “why”, and almost 100% will reply, “Because I’m a good person!” The principles I outline here are biblical, so feel free to take note of the Scriptures and try to learn some of them off by heart, and don’t be afraid to use them when talking to the unsaved. It is the power of the Spirit of God who brings conviction of sin, and we know that the Spirit of God always works in harmony with the Word: “and they being filled with the Spirit spoke the Word of the Lord with boldness” (Acts 4:31).
‘I am a good person’ is the biggest lie that Satan has ever sold mankind. This perversion of the truth has sent more people to hell than any other affirmation in world history. How often have you heard statements like these, ‘I’m going to heaven because I’m a good person’; or, ‘I don’t need to repent and put faith in Christ because I’m a good person’; or ‘God loves me because I’m a good person’. Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!
Unbelievers may have wonderful religious views and they may try to impress you with their learning; but the one thing they must know is that they are SINNERS! That was always the Biblical way of preaching; and if you share the Gospel in any other way, your Gospel (I’m afraid to say) is not Scriptural.

HAMBRE POR DIOS (español)
¿Tienes hambre? ¿Has estado hambriento alguna vez? El hambre es sinónima de vida. Un bebé llora porque tiene hambre. Dondequiera que haya hambre, allí se halla vida. Un cadáver no come nada. ¿Por qué no? ¡Porque no tiene hambre! El hambre es una fuerza poderosa; no solamente en el mundo físico, sino también en el ámbito espiritual.
La marca de un alma verdaderamente nacida de nuevo es hambre por Dios: es conocerle a Él más y vivir en obediencia a Su Palabra. He conocido a personas que me han dicho, “Yo puedo vivir cómo me da la gana ahora que he nacido de nuevo. Pase lo que pase, ¡yo voy al cielo!” ¡Engaño! El alma verdaderamente nacida de nuevo se deleitará en Dios y guardará Su Palabra. Una oveja del Señor sigue al Pastor. Si no hay fruto de santificación, no ha habido justificación. Todo lo que es nacido de Dios vence al mundo; ¡no tontea con el mundo!
Cristo pronunció Su bendición sobre los hambrientos, “Bienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia, porque ellos serán saciados” (Mateo 5:6; Lucas 6:21). Pedro nos exhortó, “como niños recién nacidos, desead la leche espiritual” (1 Pedro 2:2). Muchas veces buscamos, con temor y temblor, un testimonio de nuestra salvación, y un hambre sincera por Dios, Su Palabra y Su presencia es una de las señales más seguras que hay de redención.
Ayer, un hermano en el Señor me comentó, “Cuando nací de nuevo, no podía pararme de leer la Biblia; la leí día y noche. No la podía dejar. No sabía lo que me estaba pasando”. Esto es evidencia de un hambre dada por el Espíritu Santo. Antes, deseábamos las cosas de este mundo; pero mediante la regeneración, nuestros anhelos y afectos van dirigidos hacia Dios. Él se ha convertido en nuestra vida, nuestra luz, nuestro gozo, nuestra salvación, nuestro placer supremo y duradero. En una palabra, Cristo ha llegado a ser nuestro TODO. Un hijo del diablo no desea a Dios; ¡le odia al Señor!
La iglesia ha de ser un lugar hambriento compuesto de personas hambrientas. La historia enseña que el avivamiento siempre viene a los hambrientos. En enero 2010, tenemos que pedir a Dios que nos dé hambre de nuevo. En demasiados lugares de adoración, encontramos juegos y estrategias usurpando el lugar de la Palabra de Dios y oración; pero nos han dejado vacíos. La consecuencia es que muchos creyentes pobres no saben adónde ir: están dolidos, confusos y desorientados. Hay una verdadera hambruna por la Palabra de Dios en nuestros días; y las multitudes claman por pan.
¿Cómo podemos remediar esta situación? ¡Exaltar a Cristo en nuestros púlpitos, iglesias y vidas! Justo antes del avivamiento metodista en el siglo XVIII que vino a Gran Bretaña, no quedó casi ninguna iglesia que predicara el evangelio de Cristo. Y temo yo, que como regla general, Europa como un todo está bajo el mismo predicamento. ¿Por qué necesitamos predicar de la gloria de Cristo de nuevo? ¡Porque Él es el Pan que descendió del cielo! Él es Aquél que saciará el hambre de los necesitados. Dijo Él, “Yo soy el pan de vida; el que a mí viene, nunca tendrá hambre” (Juan 6:35).
En 2009, he podido ver a primera mano el hambre por la realidad de Dios que hay presente en nuestra Europa del siglo XXI. El anhelo por Dios no ha desaparecido. Hay multitudes que están dispuestas a batallar por la verdad del Evangelio, si tan solo les diéramos una razón para pelear. En palabras de BH Clendennen, “Hay un hambre por realidad”. Es tiempo de estar hartos de una espiritualidad superficial y de juegos religiosos baratos. ¡Es tiempo de tener hambre de nuevo!

HUNGER FOR GOD
Are you hungry? Do you ever get hungry? Hunger is synonymous with life. A baby cries because it is hungry. Wherever there is life, there is hunger. A corpse doesn’t eat anything. Why? Because a dead person isn’t hungry! Hunger is a powerful force; not only in the physical world, but in the spiritual one also.
The mark of a truly born-again soul is a hunger for God: to know Him more and to live in obedience to His Word. I have met people who told me, “I can live how I like now that I’m born again! No matter what happens, I’m going to heaven!” Deception! The truly born-again soul will delight in God and keep His Word. A sheep of the Lord follows the Shepherd. If there is no fruit of sanctification, there has been no justification. He that has born of God overcomes the world; he doesn’t flirt about with it!
Jesus pronounced His blessing on the hungry, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6; Luke 6:21). And Peter urged us, “as newborn babies, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that you may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2). Many times we search, in fear and trembling, for a testimony of our salvation, and a sincere hunger for God, His Word and His presence is one of the surest signs of redemption.
A brother in the Lord told me yesterday, “When I was born-again, I couldn’t stop reading the Bible; I read it day and night. I couldn’t put it down. I didn’t know what was happening to me!” This is an evidence of Holy-Ghost given hunger. Once we desired the things of this world; but by regeneration, our longings and affections have been turned God-wards and He has become our life, our light, our joy, our salvation, our supreme and everlasting pleasure. In a word, Jesus has become our ALL. A child of the devil does not desire God; he hates Him!
The church is to be a hungry place for hungry people. History teaches that revival always comes to the hungry. In January 2010, we need to ask God to make us hungry again. In too many places of worship we find games and strategies taking the place of prayer and the Word of God; but they have left us empty. The consequence is that many poor believers don’t know where to go: they are hurting, confused and distressed. There is a real famine for the Word of the Lord in our days; and the multitudes are crying out for bread.
How do we remedy the situation? The answer is to exalt Christ again in our pulpits, churches and lives. Before the great Methodist revival came to Britain in the 18th century, there was barely a church left that preached the pure Gospel of Christ. And I fear, that as a general rule, Europe as a whole is now under that same predicament. Why do we need to preach the glory of Christ again? Because He is that Bread sent down from heaven! He is the One that will fill the hunger of the needy. He said, “I am the Bread of life; and he that comes to me shall never hunger” (John 6:35).
In 2009 I have seen first-hand the hunger for the reality of God that is present in 21st century Europe. The longing for God has not disappeared. There are multitudes willing to battle for the truth of the Gospel if we only give them a reason to fight! In the words of BH Clendennen, “There is a hunger for reality!” It is time to get fed up with superficial spirituality and cheap religious games! It is time to get hungry again!
